Proprietary software refers to a software owned by an individual or a company and could not be used, copied, or changed freely. I was thinking of something like Microsoft office or adobe Photoshop, people are forced to purchase a license and cannot even see what the program is doing at the code level. It is in opposition to the open source programs that are free to be customized. Proprietary software typically has its own support and periodic updates, but at the same time lacks flexibility.
